ALISA GEAN, MD

Alisa's Background

Alisa is currently a Professor Emeritus of Neuroradiology and Adjunct Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Stanford University, and her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. She was an Intern at San Francisco Children’s Hospital studying Internal Medicine. Alisa then traveled to the east coast and completed a 4-year Residency program in Diagnostic Radiology followed by a 2-year Fellowship program in Neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. After leaving Boston, Dr. Gean joined the UCSF faculty in 1989 as the Chief of Neuroradiology at San Francisco General Hospital, where she has worked for the last 28 years. A world-renowned expert in traumatic brain injury, Dr. Gean has lectured nationally and internationally of the topic of TBI. She has written 4 textbooks, 53 book chapters, and over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific abstracts. She has consulted with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Neurologic Disease and Stroke (NINDS), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Department of Defense (DoD), and the National Football League (NFL) on the topic of head injury.

Alisa's interest in wine began during Medical School when she held a sales position at Beltramo's Wines and Spirits in Menlo Park, CA on weekends. Subsequently, she travelled solo extensively throughout Europe with a primary interest in Old World wines. She has passed the FWS (French Wine Scholar) exam with Honors, the CSW (Certified Specialist in Wine) exam with Honors, the WSET Level 3 (Wine and Spirits Education Trust) exam with Distinction, the IWS exam (Italian Wine Scholar) and the CWAS exam (California Wine Appellation Specialist). Alisa received her Sommelier certification from Napa Valley College and the Court of Master Sommeliers. She is currently a WSET 4 Diploma Candidate.

She's excited and honored to learn from Hindsight's brilliant winemaker, Jac Cole, about viticulture and viniculture. She's less interested in learning about the business side of the winery from her extraordinarily supportive and financially-gifted husband, Seth Gersch.

In addition to enology and neuroradiology, Alisa is a huge animal lover, enjoys yoga, gardening, 49er football, and has a strong passion for veteran's rights.
